Tryouts are coming, tryouts are coming...

Its that time of year for open tryouts. I have to be honest in saying that before I came to ASU, I was certainly not a fan of "the open tryout". The fact that we found two starters out of last years tryout has made me a believer! One of them turned out to be a first team all-conference selection and the other made the conference all-tourney team. This year's open tryout is slated for this Saturday, January 30th at 1 p.m. More details can be found at www.angelosports.com/volleyball. I am hopeful that we will see some future 'Belles out on the courts this weekend.

On another note, I want to say thank you to all of the fans that came out to support our men's and women's basketball teams this weekend. The crowd was huge and the students were loud! I have no doubt that the "6th man" presence helped both of our teams win. It is such an advantage to play in front of a great crowd. Keep it up. Our first home volleyball match is only seven months and three weeks away! Our home opener is September 9 at 7 p.m. :-) We will see all of you there.

Until the next time, keep takin' it to spike town!

And so it begins...

Hello everyone! This is my first attempt at "blogging" so please bear with me as I figure out what this is all about. :-) I looked at the statistics that come along with one of these blogging sites and it noted that I had "0" followers! Nice. I suppose that it's good to start with a round number. My intention is to use this blog as a way to keep anyone and everyone that might be interested in ASU Volleyball up to date with what's going on in our program. I hope you encourage others to follow it.

This week starts the beginning of spring training for our girls. The spring is separated into two basic parts. The first part which runs from now until the end of February is what we call the non-competition segment. During this portion, the NCAA only allows coaches eight hours per week of contact with their players. Within those eight hours, teams can weight train, condition and have small group skill training sessions of up to four players at a time. This is the time of the year when we see the biggest improvements in our players. The fall is all about preparing for the next opponent and not a lot of time can be spent on skill development. Players can go from bench-warmers to all-conference selections during this part of the year.

The second part of the spring is called the competitive segment. The NCAA allows a 45-day window to conduct 24 team practice dates. Our weekly contact hours with the athletes increases from eight to 20. Within those 24 dates, teams may participate in four "play" dates against outside competition. This is an extremely exciting portion of the year for coaches. We get to see how all the hard work put forth in the non-competition segment comes together. This year, we are hosting a spring tournament on March 27th, traveling to Texas State on April 10th and playing in a sand tournament on April 24th. Our fourth date is up in the air right now, but we hope to try and bring in a team mid-week for an evening scrimmage.

With all that being said, this morning marked our first weight training and conditioning session. I have to say that I was really impressed with how hard the girls got after it. I saw a very important look in their eyes as they worked hard to pound out those final reps. They showed me that they wanted to be great. I am so excited about the future of our program. Great job today girls.

Coach to a player: "It's match point and your setter tells you that the ball is coming to you. What are you going to do?"

Player to her coach: "No worries coach, I'm takin' it to spike town!"
